Cultivation:

Senna is generally sowed in two seasons namely February-March and July-November. For the cultivation, generally red loamy or coarse gravelly soil is selected, but it also grows on alluvial loamy soil. The crop gets ready for harvest in two months but usually first plucking of leaflets is done after three months of sowing when the bulk of the leaves appear mature, thick and blue. Second plucking is done a month later and the third plucking is taken along with the pods after the 4-6 weeks of second plucking.Normally, the plants are uprooted after third plucking of leaves.

Senna is a shrubby plant that reaches 0.5-1 m, rarely 2 m in height with a branched, pale-green erect stem and long spreading branches bearing 3-5-7 pairs of leaflets. The flowers are borne in a raceme, and are big in size, coloured yellow that tends to brown. Its pods are horned, broadly oblong, compressed and flat and contain about six seeds. When cultured, the plants are cut down semi-annually, dried in the sun, stripped and packed in palm-leaf bags.

After collection, the leaflets are dried under shade or indoor by spreading them in thin layers. Drying takes place within 7-10 days and leaves show yellowish – green colour.

India exported senna leaves worth USD Mn 11.23 in year 2017-18. Vietnam is the largest buyer of senna leaves accounting for exports worth USD Mn 2.13 followed by China, Australia and Japan which imported senna leaves worth USD Mn 1.09, 0.85 and USD Mn 0.71 respectively from India
